There are two common types of points earned: transferable and non-transferable. Transferable points allow you to use them in multiple different ways including transferring to other programs. Non-transferable points can only be used in the program which they are earned. Usually these are hotel points or airline miles. Some can be transferred, such as Marriott Bonvoy, but at a very unfavorable rate and I do not recommend this.
